Keyword research is one of the most important tasks that can make or break your SEO campaign. A lot of webmasters have a misconception about keyword research. They assume that they understand the market very well. They will just brainstorm some simple keywords and assume that these are what being searched on the search engine every single day. No matter how experience you are in the market, never assume. In today's rapid changing environment, what you know may not hold. There are a few simple basic guidelines that you can follow to conduct effective keywords research.
Firstly, you need to reassure that your targeted audience can find your site. If you are not wording the keywords in the way they are being searched for, how do you expect to have people find you? You need to know how people are searching for what information, service, or good it is you have to offer. To do this step, you need to create a valid list of initial keyword seeds. Start to build your initial keyword seeds by brainstorming, visualizing what your customers/prospects will type in the search engine.
Most of the webmasters stop after the step above. The next step that you need to do is to verify that your keyword lists is appropriate and get more keywords idea. The best tool that I can recommend you to complete this task is the free Google Keywords Tool. Google just updated his free tool recently to provide the monthly average search volume of the keywords.
All you have to do is copy and paste you initial keyword seeds into the Google Keyword Tool search box, Google will return you the search volume of each keywords, plus a whole bunch of additional related keywords. This tool will not only provide you the accurate statistics, it will open your mind to a whole new list of keywords that you have not thought about.
Simply go thru the whole list of keywords and remove all the keywords that have low search volume. You do not want to waste your time in optimizing your web pages for keywords that have low search volume.
The next step will be keyword competitive research. For all the keywords that you have collected after stage 2, you need to do a competition research on each keyword term. If a keyword term is extremely competitive, we will need to leave the keyword a side and work on those keywords that have good search volume but moderately competitive.
To conduct keyword competitive research, simply head to Google, key in the keywords and note down how many pages are found. For keywords that have more than 5,000,000 matched results, it is consider as very competitive and we should put it aside.
Once you have that list complete, then you can start you SEO campaign. Never start your SEO campaign until you have your keywords list ready.
